Hitz In Weymouth

After a very early start, the combined Hitz Team made it down to Weymouth for the 2010 Beach Rugby Tournament. The tournament was made up of teams of all shapes, sizes, ages and skill levels which made for an exciting and very entertaining day of beach tag rugby.

Our group included a team from Weymouth minis, a slightly bleary eyed (and late arriving) group called the London Italians and all shapes and sizes in between. We started well with a 3 – 1 win over the Weymouth minis, although the score line would have been heavily in Hitz favour had it not been for some artistic refereeing. We then went on to a high scoring 5 – 5 draw with Weymouth U13’s to put us at 1 win, 1 draw at the midpoint of the morning.

The most entertaining game of the morning came in the form of the London Italians team who, seemingly still suffering from the night before, attempted a very entertaining style of rugby well in the spirit of the day, but couldn’t stop a Hitz team in the ascendency from winning 5 - 4.

The Hitz team continued to rack up the tries with a 5 - 2 win against the ironically named ‘Giants’ to leave us with final pool results of 3 wins and 1 draw, surely enough to secure a place in the top tier of knockouts?

Some questionable mathematics from the tournament directors placed in the plate competition against some far more skilful and far larger opponents. Sadly, we couldn’t muster a win but some fantastic work in attack provided us with a further 9 tries, including a haul of 5 from the closest of our knockout games against Team Keenan, finishing 7-5 in their favour. Overall, a fantastic day and certainly worth the effort from all involved. It was very satisfying to see players who have never competed together develop into a potent attacking side and one that with a bit more defensive organisation would certainly have proven worthy opponents to anyone competing on the day.
